What is Planned Giving?

"A planned gift can be defined as a voluntary gift of any kind, in any amount, given for any purpose; operations, capital expansion, or endowment; either current or deferred, when the assistance of a qualified volunteer, professional staff person, or the giver's own advisor(s) is needed to help complete the gift."

MANY GIVING OPPORTUNITIES CREATE YOUR OWN LEGACY OF COMPASSION:

  • Cash and Securities
  • Real estate
  • Bequests
  • Charitable remainder trusts
  • Charitable gift annuities
  • Charitable lead trusts

Change a life, save a life, give back ...while establishing your legacy. By including the American Red Cross in your long-term giving plan, you will create meaningful opportunities for your community-but more importantly, you'll be establishing a legacy of kindness and care. It's important to determine what type of gift would fit best into your estate plan. The best plan for you will balance what you wish to accomplish for yourself, your family, and the charitable interests closest to your heart. The Red Cross offers many giving vehicles that can maximize your impact on your community while often securing excellent benefits for yourself. And if you're unsure about your estate plan overall, we're here to help.

Leave a charitable bequest...

It's never too late - or too early - to make plans for the future. It's important to consider the things we'll one day be leaving behind. Hopefully, this includes a well written will or estate plan. A will is a precious and important gift to our loved ones that ensures our assets and the items important to us are distributed in the way we desire - and not as decided by the state, which is what happens when someone passes without a will. But your will can be so much more. Beyond just a list of who gets what, your will can become an instrument of true compassion, your chance to ensure that the causes you valued during your lifetime can live on for years to come - through a charitable bequest. Your bequest gift can be tailored to complement your goals and interests. Plus, you can modify your bequest at any time if your circumstances change. Please consider including the American Red Cross in your will. You'll be leaving behind a legacy of kindness and care to help people when they need it most.

Give back to your community, and we'll give back to you ...

with an American Red Cross Charitable Gift Annuity.

Now you can make a gift that pays you back every year - with a Charitable Gift Annuity backed by the more than 125-year history and assets of the American Red Cross. Here's what a Red Cross CGA can provide for you:

  • Guaranteed annual payments for as long as you live.
  • Possible tax deductions.
  • A portion of your yearly income is tax-free.
  • Possible reduction in capital gains and estate taxes.

Tax-Free Gifts from IRAs Re-Authorized!

Congress has extended the law that allows charitable gifts directly from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) through 2009. The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 now gives you three ways to make a gift to the American Red Cross through your IRA.

  • If you're over age 70 ½, you can have the administrator of your IRA transfer up to $100,000 to the Red Cross and any other charities you support. This transfer qualifies toward your required minimum distribution. Since these funds will not be included in your income for federal income tax, you cannot claim a deduction for the gift. This is especially attractive for non-itemizers and others who have limits on their deductions.
  • If you're between ages 59 ½ and 70 ½, you can withdraw funds from your IRA and donate them to the Red Cross. The withdrawal will typically be reported as income, and then the charitable gift may be claimed as an offsetting deduction.
  • And no matter your age, you can always name the Red Cross as a beneficiary of an IRA. The Red Cross would receive all or a designated part of any remaining funds after the account holder passes away. This might be good tax planning, since IRA funds left to individuals can be heavily taxed.
